Internet2 upgrades to 100 Gbps

The Internet2 consortium has completed a major upgrade of its high-speed network. Officials from the ultra high-speed advanced networking consortium Internet2 have announced that efforts to upgrade the network's infrastructure--including a substantial boost in its overall operating speed--are complete. Among the cutting-edge capabilities of the new Internet2, which connects more than 200 member universities to aid in research and education, is the capability for university researchers to connect through a high-speed link from one research facility to another.  Full Story

Illegal downloader ordered to pay $222K

Jammie Thomas, a 30-year-old mother of two, is being sued by the recording industry. A federal jury on Oct. 4 ordered a 30-year-old Minnesota woman to pay $222,000 for sharing copyrighted music online, marking the first time one of the industry's lawsuits against an individual downloader had gone to trial. The defendant, Jammie Thomas, a single mother of two sons, said she would appeal.  Full Story

'Fair use' confusion threatens media literacy

Teachers are unsure about what is legal and what is not when using digital images and recordings in the classroom. In an age when digital images and recordings to supplement and enhance education are abounding, unnecessary restrictions and a lack of understanding about copyright law are compromising the goal of using such technology in the classroom, says a new report. After interviewing educators, educational media producers and media-literacy organizations, the report's researchers conclude that educators have no shared understanding of what constitutes fair-use practices, and that teachers face conflicting information about their rights, and their students' rights, to use copyrighted works.  Full Story

Parents, kids don't see need for math, science skills

Though students understand the importance of math and science, many stray away from courses in such subjects. A new report commissioned as part of an initiative to improve Math, Science and Technology (MST) education throughout the Kansas City area suggests that on the whole, parents, students, and local communities nationwide are complacent about or even resisting efforts to strengthen MST education, failing to realize the opportunities that knowledge of such subjects can bring in the 21st century.  Full Story

Feds tout computerized tests for key skills

The U.S. is still years away from having the infrastructure to support computer-based testing, one researcher suggests. A federal report funded by the National Center for Education Statistics says computer-based testing holds promise for measuring "21st-century" and higher-order thinking skills that cannot be measured easily via traditional pencil-and-paper exams. One of the study's researchers notes, however, that the United States may well be years away from developing the infrastructure to support such testing.  Full Story

Smithsonian debuts 'virtual museum'

Visitors to the Smithsonian's Nat'l Museum of African American History and Culture web site can Social networking technology will allow visitors of an interactive web site to chart the future of the Smithsonian Institution's newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, set to open in 2015. Museum officials say the interactive technology will allow those who wish to share their memories, photos, essays, and oral histories, bringing together people interested in the African American experience and those who have "great stories to tell."  Full Story

Greater interoperability in K-12 schools will help students and teachers share digitized content. The Schools Interoperability Framework Association (SIFA) and the Defense Department's Advanced Distributive Learning (ADL) Initiative are collaborating to improve interoperability in K-12 schools. Through the development of a new version of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model, or SCORM, the two groups hope to transform the way education content is shared, with a focus on improved teaching and learning. "Core SCORM" will feature capabilities including the aggregation of learning content, search and discovery, and tracking student achievement.  Full Story

Chances are unlikely for a settlement soon in the patent dispute between Blackboard and Desire2Learn, experts say. The patent dispute heats up between enterprise software makers Blackboard Inc. and Desire2Learn Inc. over patent rights that Blackboard was granted in January 2006 for its course-management software and other eLearning products.  Full Story

Purdue puts emergency texting to the test

Recent research suggests the effectiveness of text messaging during a campus emergency. Officials say the successful results of a recent experiment conducted at Purdue University to test text messaging as a form of emergency communication could be a promising step in the effort to equip college campuses with reliable and adequate emergency response plans. Nearly 3,000 of the 9,979 volunteers who signed up for the experiment replied to the test text message within the first 10 minutes.  Full Story

Report slams Va. Tech's response to shootings

A new panel report says more could have been done to save lives during the Va. Tech massacre in April. A state-appointed panel in Virginia that spent the last four months investigating the April shootings at Virginia Tech. concludes that though the university's response to the emergency was prompt, effective and well-coordinated, a number of critical errors in judgment occurred prior to the shootings as well.  Full Story
